Tim Tebow Controversy

This latest "news" story about Tim Tebow not receiving 100% of the 1st team SEC votes was so stupid that I originally wasn't gonna talk about it at all.  Then, when Spurrier came out and said he was the one who originally voted for Snead, said it was a mistake, and changed his vote, I really got confused/upset and had to write something.  A few things about this:

First of all, it was one of the dumbest things Ive ever seen create a controversy.   What if one of the coaches legitimately thought that Snead was better than Tebow?  Furthermore, you know what a preseason all-SEC team selection is worth?  Nothing.  Not only that, but Tebow did merit that selection, he just didnt get it unanimously.  You know the difference between being a unanimous selection and a selection....again, nothing.

Imagine walking into class in college, and the first day they have a ballot of who they think is going to be the funniest person in the class.  22/23 people vote for you, and 1 person votes for someone else.  You won, convincingly...what does this mean?  Do you get an award? No.  Does this make you the funniest person?  No.  Are you upset that you only got 22/23 votes?  No.

Tebow has a Heisman trophy and 2 BCS titles.  I dont think he could care any less that a coach voted for someone else in the league.

THEN Spurrier comes out and says it was his fault.  That someone else filled it out, he glanced over it, turned it in.  And then he goes as far to change it.  So wait a minute, the coaches dont even fill that out?  So now, in your college class, its not your classmates voting for you, instead, they go home and have their roomates fill out the "funniest person" ballot.  Then your classmates turn it in.  If it turns up that there was a mistake, they can change it....

Can you change who you voted for for president after you vote?

So now, Tebow is a unanimous first team SEC QB.  Great.  But theres one more thing I need to say about this whole process.  This was the reason I started writing this post.  Everybody was saying how only getting 10/11 votes was going to motivate Tebow (these people obviously never played any sport), despite Meyer and Tebow's insistence that it didn't matter.  But, the reason Im writing this is, what about Jevan Snead?

Can you imagine a more disrespectful way to treat someone.  Again, what if a coach actually voted for Snead as the best QB in the SEC (he has been projected at some places to be the #1 pick in the NFL draft), and then you were criticized for your choice, and there was non-stop coverage about how Tebow is/was better than Snead.  How would you feel if you were Snead?  Wouldnt that motivate you more than Tebow not getting one vote?   Then, just when Snead might have had the hope that 1 coach thought he was the best in the SEC, Spurrier comes out and says voting for Snead was a mistake, and that he wants to change his vote.   Can you imagine this playing out in our classroom analogy?

Professor:  "Tom received 22/23 votes for class' funniest.  Come on.  Its not even close.  Who voted for Frank?  Man, Tom is way funnier than Frank.  I cant believe that its not unanimous and anyone thinks that Frank is as funny as Tom."

Cynthia: "Oh professor, my roomate brought it to my attention that we accidentally put Frank's name down.  But, we do in fact think that Tom is funnier.  So, I'd like to change my vote to Tom"

(awkward stares between Cynthia and Frank)

What Im saying is, this started as a crock of shit, a no-news story that they were trying to make controversy out of.  It turned into a total circus, and ended up being totally disrespectful to other players in the league.  They continually credit the SEC as the best league in the nation, yet they cant credit other players in the league when they may deserve it.  Spurrier also brought up the process in which he votes, which totally devalues the preseason conference rankings even more.  They were so worried about protecting Tebow's psyche or confidence or something that they damaged someone elses.

The media, once again, should be ashamed of themselves.
